There used to be loads of good fabric shops. I could go to about seven easily in the town that I used to live in. All but one have closed down, and that one sells rubbish. There's none at all in my current my home town. There's three market stalls but what they sell is 'tat.'. I've just found some online fabric shops, but I hesitate as it wouldn't be the same as going into a shop. I miss the smell of the fabrics, the sight of all the gorgeous colours and handling various fabrics. When I stopped dressmaking I didn't figure on this feeling that I'm missing out on something that is my blood, and that I need! How do you feel about it, and if you still make clothes, where do you buy fabrics?

Unfortunately, people started demanding cheap fabrics, so the local stores stopped selling nice ones, and then the independent shops dropped out altogether. You'll have to travel to get good fabric anymore, and of course pay the real price - but someone who knows quality, knows that it costs money. I suggest buying on the internet for most of the year, but making one trip a year to Honk Kong or New York if you can afford it.

Well I see you live in the UK and I live in Australia now, but I buy fabrics from www.spotlight.com.au They have a great range of dressmaking and suiting fabrics and patchworking fabrics, curtaining, upholstery materials etc etc. Their catalogue would be worth a look. Postage might be the only problem, depending on the original fabric cost.

i found the same problem in the town where i live. the only shop left never has what i want and the fabric is so thin and nasty no quality anymore. i just buy if i see some good material that might come in handy one day just to keep in stock. never brought any off net as i like to see what i am buying, but i suppose i will have to risk it sooner or later.

Finding quality fabrics is a problem!! I'm lucky to still have one really nice store in my city. Otherwise, it is online shopping for me. You do miss the fun of going in and touching and seeing and talking to the other people about what they are making. I keep hearing that sewing is gaining popularity again - I hope so!!!

I used to, around 20 years ago, but like you say, the only fabric now is curtain/cushion stuff! Have a look on e-bay, I did get some faux suede from fabric-cath, she seemed to have a big fabric collection.

My mother-in-law would do it and she tells me that the market is on the downfall. There are still companies out there that sell fabrics and such, but your best bet are online sources. Keep your eyes peeled, I'm sure this will not die out all together.
