I'm really impressed! I couldn't learn from a book. I had to have a live teacher to help me. My mother tried when I was a child but that was almost as bad as having a family member teach you to drive.
I like the "Art of Knitting" DVDs, which you can get at Michaels. Also, search the internet for stitch 'n b*tch groups in your community. Or go to a yarn store -- not Wal-mart and ask the owner to help you pick out a simple pattern and some yarn and show you how to get started. Most yarn store owners are more than happy to get you hooked on the hobby. Just be aware that if you need more than about 10 or 15 minutes of her time, she may suggest that you pay for lessons.
Local community centres or schools often have lessons if you decide to go that route. And quite often senior's residences will have a few ladies who may be happy to exchange lessons for some small services from you.

I learned from library books. I recommend Sally Melville's "The Knit Stitch" She has sweater patterns you can do all it garter stitch (because you will get tired of just knitting scarves) A video will help you see where to put your hands and the yarn, too. I don't know anyone who knits to show me that part.
Keep practising and it will become easier. Try not to let your stitches get too tight. And I found it easier to learn on big needles, you can see the stitches better. Get inexpensive needles and yarn at a secondhand store. Don't start with the fluffy yarns, it's too hard to see the stitches, and if you drop a stitch, you can't find it again.

I taught myself how to knit from a book, so sure, you really can. I also taught myself how to crochet from a book.
Knitting Today has several forums you should check out, there is one for hand knitting. The people on the forum are great, and are full of helpful ideas.
Likewise, check out Yahoo's groups.

yes. I've learned 95% from books. If you join a local knitting club you might be able to get tips from others too. Check out local coffee shops, cafes and yarn stores to find out about local knitting groups.

The Vogue Knitting book. You can probably find it at the library. Lots of detailed drawings and photos to do step by step.
