Today I followed a recipe for home-made granola...It turned out very good but I am wondering how long it will stay fresh. I have it in a zip lock bag right now.

1 1/2 cups brown sugar
1/2 cup water
4 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
1 teaspoon salt
8 cups rolled oats
1 cup pecans, coarsely chopped
1 cup almonds, coarsely chopped
dried fruits, if desired

I need to know of good lunch foods that I can put in my boyfriend's cooler besides sandwiches. He's sick sick sick of sandwiches, but works outside so he can't just bring hot food to work or it will spoil. He only has a cooler, no access to fridge or microwave. Any suggestions?

Looking through recipes, I have noticed a huge difference in vinagar to water portions. Anywhere to 5 parts vinagar to 1 part water or half and half. I am not looking to pickle peppers just to can mild banana peppers or Jalpeno peppers. What actually preserves peppers so they don't go bad after canning? Is it the vinagar or the air tight seal?? Should I be using pickling salt to preserve?
