The coconut that falls from the coconut palm has a solid outer shell with a thick layer of porous fiber underneath it. That has a lot of air pockets in it so the coconut will float for some time. The coconuts you see in the store have had the fiberous layer removed so all you see is the center pod. That pod has water in it, depending on how old it is - the older, the less water. When a coconut is "ripe" you can spoon the white part out like custard. What we see in the stores is really overripe coconut - the hard white part.

Why Do Coconuts Float

the coconut's shell is like a liferaft. Why does a life raft float? because it's density is less than water. To find density, you divide the weight by the volume. If it is over 1, it will sink in water... so, coconuts have densities less than 1 so it floats

Has to do with the density of the mass, the coconut is hollow except for the water inside which does not fill it completely.

It's a Darwinist thing connected to it's ability to travel. Palm trees grow near the sea, if they couldn't float to their destination, they would have to roll along the sea bed causing severe travel delays.
