Is the addicted parent(s) still addicted? Have they recovered? If they are still addicted, how do you cope with it?

I'm 23 years old, have an alcoholic father, he's not in recovery. He was never around, and still has no active part in my life. I choose to cope by pushing it out of my mind.

I'm curious how others are coping.

I work 3rd shift, My best friend has stated that she would watch my 6 year old daughter while I'm at work. Here's how this will go down, I'll get my child to bed and asleep by 8:30, I'll leave for work around 10:30pm and I'll get back home around 7:30am.

With school starting all my friend has to do is get her up for school, and make sure she matches.. She's 6, she can get her own breakfast and what not..
Anyway, How much should I pay her to sleep on my couch, Watch tv and play on the internet?

What do you think?
She'll be babysitting Sunday nights thru friday mornings.

Any help would be appreciated.

I hate this... I can't do anything without my damn stepfather getting into my business... until I'm 18 (in a few months), I still have to put up with it... Whenever I use the phone, I have to take both of them to make sure no one's listening one the other line... and until I got my own computer, I couldn't do anything on the family computer without him violating my privacy.
Does anyone else have intrusive step-parents like this? How can I deal with it until I can move out? I feel trapped, and I hate it.

I met this girl on the internet, after talking for weeks, we dated, talked on the phone for hours, and then basically spent almost the entire weekend together, no intercourse, but very intimate. It seemed like a perfect weekend. Suddenly, last Monday I received an email about not wanting a totally committed relationship. So, we went from hot to cold overnight. She says she just wants to slow down, continue to date others and continue to see me. I don't want to be the lap puppy, I think she's scared because we got serious fast. Now, I am confused about how to pursue this relationship. I feel like she is being honest with me about her feelings, but then again can one really be certain. We continue to date, but I guess I just want to hear what others think. I'm not a game player, so I have been clear that I want to see her. She has said the same thing, just not committed. Is this worth the wait or am I wasting time?

My ex boyfriend committed suicide last year. I hadn't talked to him for about 3 years so it wasn't horrible for me to deal with. Just a huge shock. Plus I cannot even begin to imagine what his family is going through. What do you say to family/friends of someone who's killed themself? I still think about him and his poor family often.

This guy i fell in love with seduced three married women before me (i was married too) but he did care about all of them as friends. we were friends, nothing happened at all but gradually feelings developed and before i knew it i was in love with him. i even accepted that he would be with another woman in the begining. and i never felt that way before. we have a really emotional relationship. i know he is cheating, but i have heard him tell the girls that nothing more will happen, that he wants to be with me. one girl was trying so hard to be with him, she couldn't understand why he'd chose me. he wants to get married to me, start a family, for me to live with him. he tells these women that 'it's just a bit of fun' and i am his love. he doesn't know i read the letters. and i accepted what was in them. but now it comes to being serious with him, getting married and i cant do it. tried to end it before, it ends up in big drama. and he thinks it's my fault. i still love him deep.

I recently inherited (and live in) a house from an uncle in a small gated community where everyone knows everyone else. He was an unofficial mentor, sort of a "big brother" to a troubled 13 year old boy in the neighborhood. The boy has been in trouble with the law and in and out of Juvie a few times last year, but seemed to have been doing better since my uncle took an interest. At least that's what my uncle told me. I have since learned that the boy had been stealing from my uncle and in trouble with the law a few more times. Three of my neighbors have warned me to stay away from him and told stories of his now legendary rage. Before I learned of this I had been considering taking up where my uncle left off and doing what I could for him, around working full time and night school.
My questions: Should I take the chance that I could do this kid some good? If not, How do I tell him to stop coming around without him killing me in my sleep, or any other mayhem he may invent?

I have finally come to the point of accepting that my ex, my 8 year love of my life since high school has left me. She needs to "find herself (whatever!) and do things she has never had the chance to do in our relationship. She has told me she still loves me and that just screws with my head but now she says she still wants to be my friend and be able to talk to me.

That just makes me feel like i can still be her back up plan if nothing better comes along. Am i mis reading the situation and does it sound genuine or not. Unfortunately, as much as she has hurt me a part of me is still holding on and this friends things does interest me as a means of maybe getting back together some day. Your thoughts on the meaning of this and what i should do would be great.
