Global Warming

If global warming is really a crisis, I'd say we're not doing enough or even thinking big enough. Everything I've seen suggested seems like no more than a drop in the bucket. The range of ideas out there only confuse the issue.

If resources and political power are not an issue, what are the three things that we should do to really make a difference in a short period of time (say, 10 years)?

God gave man dominion and so on. Therefore there is a split between humanity and nature. So we don't respect nature as we should. Also, church opposition to population control has led to over-population which also feeds into global warming. And according to Weber, capitalism (with its growth-maximizing tendencies) is strongly influenced by the Calvinist doctrine of predestination (i.e. if you're not rich, God doesn't like you).

So is it all due to the Bible?

This week it was announced that Melbourne Victoria Australia had its driest year (as in the last 365 days in a row) on record. What about where you live elsewhere in the world? (excluding south eastern Australia which we know is in the same dire straits as Melbourne and most other towns in Victoria).

Most of the arguments I see on here about how we shouldn't worry about global warming fall into four categories. The writers:

1) get the facts wrong
2) launch ad hominem attacks on Al Gore and others
3) claim global warming is a conspiracy
4) quote "scientists" who are awash in money from oil and coal companies

Check this out: http://gristmill.grist.org/skeptics.

Seriously, people, look up the facts and listen to the thousands of climate scientists out there. We don't have to do anything radical, we just have to live smarter. Your grandkids will thank you.

You must know all the carbon locked up in coal, oil&gas was at one time in the atmosphere in the form of CO2. Way back then the atmosphere 100s of times more CO2 than it now has. And yet at that time biomass was being generated at a far greater rate than now.

Half of them that are government or U.N. funded tell us that global warming is man made, the other half that are funded by big business tell us that it's a naturally occuring event caused by the Sun, so which scientists do we believe and how does a layperson pick which group of scientists to believe are we subject to press propaganda or do we read the facts from a variety of sources and make up our own minds ? and then again can't facts be manipulated to suit your own agenda ??

In the distant past much more biomass was generated-why then and not now?

2007-05-16 10:14:35 · 11 answers · asked by jim m 5

the earth's climate has always run in cycles from very cold to very warm. only 2% of the CO2 in the atmosphere is produced by human activity. I guess it doesn't hurt to try but is seems a bit like pissing in the ocean to me.

Since most of the surface of Earth is not producing any biomass at this time why not do whatever is reqired to help plants grow? If 1/3 of the surface was producing boimass there would be no CO2 problem.
