It's something of a myth that India and China are responsible for global warming. True, they contribute to the problem and China is the second biggest polluter in the world but when you take into account the number of people living in each country then China ranks 99th in the world and India ranks 133rd in terms of emissions per person (out of 211) - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_carbon_dioxide_emissions_per_capita
Whilst boith countries acknowledge global warming is a serious threat and have signed up to treaties such as Kyoto they don't, at present, have the resources to tackle the problem in the same way that Europe or Japan are doing.
If they were to take the same measures some other countries are doing they would need to replace much of the infrastructure and this would be economically disasterous. There are measures that are being implemented and they are doing what can practically be done. Maybe as the economies grow and they have more resources they'll be better placed to address the issues.

By investing wisely and learning from other's mistakes. They don't need to follow the old USA blueprint on how to build a new economy, they can skip a lot of that, and become super-modern right off the bat.
Like instead of using coal, go for wind or nuclear. For cars, it's one place that can build a hydrogen infrastructure easily. For appliances and electronics, they can go to green only, skip the wasteful stuff.
They can maintain forests instead of cutting them down like in the USA.
Basically, they can go from 3rd world to first world, and skip all the pollution in between by learning from other's mistakes.

Eat more beef. It's a fact that one of the causes of global warming is methane. Cows are a producer of methane. Therefore if you eat some of those cows wandering aimlessly through your streets, you will stop their methane, and save the world.

It has to be economically beneficial to India, for them to make their own decision, to put healthy environmental practices in place. They need to have standards and practices for factories that are non polluting. The country needs to value it's most precious resource, it's citizens and make sure the environment is safe.
