I think it's happened before and now we're making a big fuss over it. In fact I know it has happened before. Those pictures of giant chunks of ice falling into the ocean are just the natural result of the normal summer melting that happens every year. The scientists talk about long term reductions in the amount of ice due to the winter freeze adding back Juuuuust a little less ice than was lost in the summer melt, but there are no dramatic pictures than can show that, so the politically motivated films show these really spectacular summer melting pictures along with scary voice over about their political agenda on the environment. It isn't science. It is politics.

Without a doubt, catastrophic events have happened in the past; but never on the scale we're witnessing today.

This is most definitely the tip of a fast-melting iceberg. The question is, once the problem gains momentum, and world leaders realize we need a plan to minimize human impact on the environment, will it be too late?

We are living in the holocene era. In the past as one other poster put it, all continents were in one mass. Over the course of time we have had massive catastrophes on this planet. The last ELE (extinction level event) took out the dinosaurs...and that took several millenia of various types of bombardment ( volcanoes, asteroid impact). In this current era, WE are the cause of the ELE...mankind is causing the mass extinction. Thankfully the earth has a way of cleansing itself (Global Warming and an ICE AGE). Millions of plant and animals will die (including us). It is sad but true.

well, considering that the temperature on antarctica is currently averaging 50 below zero, it will take more than a pathetic few degree rise in temp to begin to melt it's ice sheet and therefore cause it to "split".(LoL)
