GW skeptics keep asking "how do we know this is the ideal climate?", suggesting that climate change isn't a big deal because we don't know what the perfect global climate should be.

First off, nobody is suggesting this is the "ideal climate". What is suggested is that humans shouldn't alter the global climate drastically.

Secondly, if we do alter it drastically we can predict the effects. For example, global warming can cause droughts, floods, heat waves, super hurricanes, huge sea level rises, etc. etc.

Thirdly, the species on this planet (including humans) are adapted to the current climate. Obviously if the climate changes drastically, it will adversely effect most species, including humans. Many species which are less adaptable than humans will be particularly badly effected.

This "ideal climate" argument clearly doesn't make any sense whatsoever, so why do global warming skeptics keep bringing it up? Did Rush Limbaugh just talk about it or something?

This question comes after reading an article where China says that poor countries should not sacrifice their growth to the general concern about global warming and other environment issues. They have a point by adding that most of the green house emissions comes from the richest countries and that the effect of slowing their economy is far worst than the global warming effect. I belief that if we are able to travel to the moon and orbit the earth, we can find a better way to produce our goods and energy needs in a more efficient and cleaner way than today. Because of the fundings needed for research and development it needs to be done by the governments of the wealthiest nations. We as individual also need to play a part to be more efficient in the use of energy, water and goods. And this is not only is good for the environment but also for your own family budget.

What were your opinions on this movie? was there enough evidence in this movie concerning global warming or not? who do you think is responsible for it? do you think global warming is a natural event or Man-made? what would your solutions be?

I had to ask this question as I honestly do not know anyone who believes in it, or maybe they do but they certainly don't believe that us as humans contribute a vast amount in the overall scheme of things (a UN report states that livestock contribute more CO2 than all forms of transport combined). Surely everyone must now see this for the government propaganda that it is; just another way to screw an honest pound out of the hardworking taxpayer. It really makes me sick to hear politicians warbling on about how they are putting taxes up for 'environmental reasons' or to reduce CO2 emissions. Puhleese! I cannot believe that anyone is falling for this nonsense and those that do fall for it and are constantly harping on about saving the planet are putting a big smile on politician's faces as it just keeps on giving them excuses to raise taxes. Stop playing into the politician's hands!

At last the British government has woken up to the fact that if you really are going to reduce your carbon imitations enough to make a difference, you must go Nuclear. Renewables won’t even get close to being able to produce the energy we need.

I am not a believer that CO2 is causing Global Warming, but let us assume for a moment that it is true.

Now, the fact that there is very little that can or will in fact be done to halt the pending catastrophes of Global Warming, maybe it is time we start looking ahead at how we mange the problem.

Don’t we have a moral duty to restart our research, development and production of genetically modified crops so we will be in a position to help the parts of the world hit by these predicted catastrophes? Or does or fear of this science out way the needs of the starving millions?

Where my husband works there is an abundance of wood being scrapped after skids are made... In the winter we bring home a bunch and use it for our woodburner it's safe dried hardwood.. My question is, there a way or an organization out there that will buy the wood and repurpose it somehow... At the present the company just throws it away/or pays a hauler.

that show we are currently experiencing a statistically significant increase in global temperatures in this climate cycle?

I am asking this because I don't believe data from the last 150 years or so is a sufficient time period to show that man-kind has increased the temperature versus natural increases.

I have looked for a few of these studies but was unable to find what I was looking for.

Thanks,

Now that Bush has admitted that global warming is real, do you feel that he is too late with his turn around?

Do you feel that Bush is only making an opinion of this issue to better his "nice and supportive" image as one of his last attempts as president?

People, most people know the basic "Day after tomorrow facts" but to people know how to stop it, prevent it, what it's caused by, and do you know that it is 100% at the fault of humans? I'm not a Science Dork trying to make " a difference" I'm just a kid that's shocked to know that even some of my teachers don't know what's goig on outside of the box. Please think about it, cuz when the time comes I hope that you all are on top of things. I know it's cheesy, but Climatecrisis.org, (the site for An Inconvenient Truth) is a great site to visit if you want easy to comprehend info. thanks for reading this long detail paragraph but this really is important.

Whether or not you believe human-kind is responsible for global warming, I am sure many of you have noticed really bad evidence to back up claims on both sides. How can we help people to learn about what good scientific facts are and how to use these relevant facts in a discussion?

Here are some poor examples I have seen:

"There were once trees in the Sahara"
"I have noticed it has gotten hotter out so it must be due to global warming."
"Because the scientists agree on it, it must make it true"
"There is a hole in the ozone layer so it must be causing global warming"
"The ice sheets are melting, so it must be global warming"
"We are so insignificant that we couldn't possibly be causing global warming"

Do you have any more bad examples? and how can we help people use credible evidence to back up their claims?

I've thought about talking about drowning polar bears, or talking about the elimination of several species in years to come. I've also considered putting up a picture of a certain place many years ago, and show how drastically it has changed over the years.
What do you think? I want it to really be a shocker, and really grab the attention of the listeners!
Anything would help!

I keep hearing this claim from GW skeptics too. For one thing, if you don't believe that human CO2 emissions cause global warming (GW), why are you even making this argument? Secondly, it's simply untrue, as can be seen here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carbon_dioxide_emissions

Granted those stats are from 5 years ago, but China has not made up the 2.5 billion metric tons/year (or 10% of total emissions) gap behind the USA in that short time period.

Thirdly, even if China had caught the US in annual CO2 emissions, the US would still emit FAR more per capita due to our smaller population, and is responsible for FAR more of the atmospheric CO2 concentration because of our high level of emissions over many decades.

Fourthly, China is still a developing country so the US should be expected to reduce our emissions first as a developed country anyway.

So why do GW skeptics keep making this false and irrelevant claim?

2007-06-03 13:04:58 · 10 answers · asked by Dana1981 7

In a question related to how great he thinks I am, 'Always 100 percent accurate' (and ironic name) claimed that atmospheric CO2 increase [always] follows a global temperature increase. I've heard that argument here several times from GW skeptics, but why do they keep making it?

If you examine the following 2 plots from 1960-Present:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Mauna_Loa_Carbon_Dioxide.png
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Instrumental_Temperature_Record.png

You'll see that atmospheric CO2 and global temperature are increasing at the same time, with temperature lagging slightly behind CO2 increase.

The logic is that because CO2 followed temperature increases in the past, it must always follow in that order, but that's a logical fallacy. Of course CO2 can cause a temperature change because it's a greenhouse gas! 1 more plot worth examining:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Climate_Change_Attribution.png

So why do GW skeptics keep repeating this false claim?
