The Union of Concerned Scientists, a big environmental corporation contributes about 14 million dollars to global warming studies each year, and what do you know they all favor man made global warming.
Now compare that to the 2 million spent by Exxon Mobil per year.
You ask an important question when an oil company funds research it is immediately declared biased and unable to be used, but no one seems to have a problem with studies funded by big environmental companies, these studies are paraded as models of unbiased research.
Get real, big corporations fund studies on both sides of the issue the only difference is that the studies funded by big environmental companies are accepted while those done by oil are dismissed.

Most of the research that is used to prove global warming is funded for some other reason. That other reason usually comes down to wanting to know more about the planet and how it operates. There is, for instance, a worldwide fleet of robotic vehicles collecting physical oceanographic data. That fleet is funded, for anyone who wishes to use the data, by governmental and military entities, and by research institutions that depend on tax dollars, individual and corporate donations. There are a huge number of reasons for assembling and using this dataset, proof of the heat-flows and pH shifts involved with global warming is just one of them. When you decide that you need to know the planet better, data such as global warming tends to get noticed and included.
The people that do direct research on the effects of global warming are being funded more and more by insurance conglomerates, who really need to know what they are facing. People funding civic planning are beginning to pay attention. The government, corporate, and individual entities that have the most to gain by keeping the status quo on fossil fuels are also the entities that think cutting back on government funding for scientific study of the planet as a whole is a good idea. If you look at who is asking for money to repair and upgrade our earth observation satellite constellation, vs those who would actually defund some of those satellite programs to go for supposed manned space programs, you'll get a fairly good idea of who is on what side.

The other side is just university professors who are getting paid by the university or just politicians or famous people speaking out on something they don't know anything about. Mostly its Socialists who believe in Global Warming because its a way to get back into power kind of like Nazi Germany gained power. Kind of funny how the people who think there is Global Warming is really quick to put down people who don't believe in it.

Oil companies do alot of the work willingly. The government pulls the strings due to pressure from ecology groups and the oil companies kick in. I used to work for them so I know they are already burying huge C02 canisters in the ground to combat global warming.

Much is financed by private organisations and private institutes - the same as with a lot of research.
Many research establishments are completely independent and receive no outside funding.
Entrepreneurs including Bill Gates and Sir Richard Barnson have pledged billions of dollars to the fight against global warming.
There is some government funding but it is much smaller than many skeptics would have you beleive.
Many multinationals also pay for their own research or finance outside research. British Petroleum, Nissan, Toyota and Microsoft are some such organisations.
