i have noticed that different parts of the u.s have different styles of music that's popular. what is the most popular where you live? i'm from tennessee, so everyone assumes i listen to country(i don't by the way...well very few country songs). have you ever had someone assume you listen to a certain kind of music because of where you live?

The Criminals - Union Yes
Rancid - Blacklisted
Wizo - The Count
-Love that Fat Wreck Comp-
Minor Threat - Bottled Violence
Scotch Greens - River of Blood
Just about every song from State of Alert (w/ Henry Rollins!)

Let's leave out stuff by the big bands like The Beatles, Stones or The Who, etc. The classic rockers are in a separate class here.

I'm talking acts that put out a few singles or one-hits of the era.

Maybe you heard your parents singing or playing them around the house (like me), or you saw a movie & liked the music...no matter.

What I like about that whole period is the innocence. So many genuinely sweet & naive (in the good way) songs that still strike a chord today somehow. Back when holding hands was worth writing a hit over. Though the world wasn't *perfect* back then, many of the songs still sounded so ...happy :)

Remember now- nothing into the 70s or later...

Some O' mine. Wonder if any of these are on Youtube:

"5 O' Clock World"- The Vogues
"Green Onions"- Booker T & The MGs
"Runaway"- Del Shannon (one of the 1st pop songs to use an early synthesizer. Great little tune!)

"The Rain, The Park, * Other Things"- The Cowsills
-a bunch of Monkees songs

turns out the pyscho at the omaha mall shooting was a manson fan.....during an episode of anderson cooper on CNN, they had an interview with people who knew the shooter...a couple years ago at a church function the idiot took over at dj and played a marilyn manson song and freaked everyone out when the whole night they were playing those christian songs you see commercials for on TV...a short time after that, the church group kicked him out and when he left said"now you'll see your star"--i'm gueesing he was quoting "antichrist superstar" with that one... will poor brian, i mean marilyn ever get a break?? man he killed more people than small pox!!!

Love em myself. Soundtrack to My Youth and all that. And I think they are one of the greatest Synth bands ever. Not to mention they totally rock and were a huge New Wave influence.

Skynyrd gets the press, and for southern rock they're probably the best but it's debateable.

My brother was born 1959. He loved 60's & 70's rock. I want to make him a mixed CD w/the best rock songs from those times. I know of a lot of good songs myself, but wanted to get an opinion of others, on what may be some of the BEST rock from then. Thanks!

The ticket says 8:00, but I know his wife Pegi opens the show. Does she come on at 8:00? How long does she play, and what kind of music is it? Does she have a band, or is it just her? Any info would be helpful as I'm trying to plan my night. Thanks!

And when I say "new", it can be new as in- *current* Or recorded in 1976, but new to *you*.

The last 2 weeks, I've been on here asking for suggestions & compiled a list (feel free to add to it, btw)

With me, if I'm not 'grabbed' by the song in the 1st 1- 1:30 (or by the time the chorus comes along the 2nd time) its over. I try at least 2 songs & I Wiki'/ allmusic for band info'. (Amazing what those sites classify as punk/post punk, metal, btw!) They have to sound different & catchy in SOME way, before I take notice & wanna hear more.

Here's bands I ended up liking:

A7X- I was worried when I picked up on a hint of pop punk vocals, but the music was def' heavier w/ thrash leanings. Good to hear solos! Though they can do w/o the silly make up.

Ok Go- Great treadmill vid! Sounded closer to 70s powerpop. Liked their sense of humor!

Powerman 5000- Different vocals! yay! Sort of an electronic feel. Dude vaguely reminded me of Billy Idol visually & vocally.

Please don't answer unless you know what your talking about.

personally i like Rush, Neil Peart on the drums owns. Led Zeppelin has great driving force behind a good deal of their music, but i find the lyrics, for the most part shallow and just 'catchy', while Rush tends to have more songs with what i think has a deeper meaning (like Freewill) and songs like Xanadu add the driving force of LZ. my opinion. whats yours? feel free to yell at my views.
