Are special education diplomas really a high school diploma?
or are they a certificate of completion?
One person asked why a teacher would ask a special ed kid to drop out and get a GED?
Some of the answers are a special ed diploma you can
not go to college, but you can with a GED.
I myself have LD and passed my GED in 1989,I learned
more from taking the GED classes than I did in Special ed
classes.Do you think the GED is the way to go for some
kids with learning disabilities? I hope schools are doing
more today to help these kids, get them when they are young and maybe they can be mainstreamed by high school and get the real thing.

I was wondering what people thought about self-paced learning?
Personally, I think it is a great idea. Instead of a whole group of people learning at one general level, each student can learn at their own pace. I suppose that is why students are either promoted or held back. I suggest that intead of using that method, I suggest using other methods to give the student an opportunity to never get a grade less than an A, the more they repeat, the more they are apt to get a better grade, plus their would be incentives to accomplish more, instead of the deterring effects of not accomplishing tasks in a timely manner.

I remember back in school, we would read a small section, then answer some questions. We raced to finish thes in order to finish first and go to recess. That meant getting a passing grade and believe me, we did whatever we could to get to recess early.

I have a child in Special ED and I am trying to sign him up for homeschooling. He is in the 9th grade and law requires you have a Bach. degree to homeschool 9-12. I only have an Assoc. degree but his current skills are only about 3-4 grade level. (He is capable of so much more, the reason i am removing him and wanting to school myself) I am not getting answers from the BOE about doing this, if anyone can help with some legalities on how i can remove him from school, any way possible. He is 15and we live in Tennessee if that helps. thanks in advance!

A friend of mine had her child tested privately and the results told her that her kid had a severe learning disability and an IQ of 60. This seems way off to me, her daughter is very observant and engaging. How could she have made it to grade six with none of her teachers noticing any problems and has not been in any resource program?

There is a 10 year old student at my school who cannot read on grade level. He is currently reading at about a late-kindergarten level. Do some students simply not learn to read? I'm beating my head against the wall trying to figure out what to do. He is classified LD and in SpEd, so that's already taken care of. We're looking at assistive technology so that he can scan textbooks into a computer to have it read to him, and that sort of thing. We've checked his visual perception, his IQ is average, he wears glasses to see things far away. ??? I think that SOMETHING has to be wrong, but I don't know what........any ideas? He reads better when the font size is larger (he says it's because it has "more white space" :) ). A page of 12pt. text seems to "swim" when he's trying to read it. He can't seem to focus onto each individual word (but bookmarks with holes in it help some...).

Help?
