You are probably thinking about acid etching...Coat the metal in wax, draw through the wax with a pointy tool and then put the metal in acid. The acid won't eat through the wax, but will etch the metal where you scraped the wax off.

There is WAY more to the process than this, you will need expert help and SERIOUS safety equipment. DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME

Just get a dog tag at Walmart.
