I have a student who is autistic and the school can't figure out why he is stuck on a first grade level reading and will not move up. I am not working with him and could it be that he is dyslexic? Can a child of autism have dyslexia?

My little brother is 26 he has a high school deploma and he can't read or write. He graduated from High School in Ceder Ridge CO. at the age of 19. He is mentally slow and they just pushed him through school because they could do anything for him. Know it is impossible to get help for him because he has a real High school deploma. I have been trying for years and have had no luck. He has a job and works 5 days a week. he lives with our dad because he has no idea how to take care of himself finantialy, and he can't drive so he needs transportation. He has the mind of about a ten year old he is very innocent. He is the niceist guy you could ever meet. I don't think he will ever do anything intentually wrong. I would love to help him live his own life and have his own home but I don't know how and I can't seem to find the answere. Please help me find an answere. All help will be grately appreciated.

I feel like half the time I don't even know what I am saying. I am overwhelmed with parents, advocates, and lawyers, much less paperwork and NCLB!

I got my answers that this diploma is almost worthless.
What is the point in these LD kids to stay in school when they are going to get a certificate that will not enable them to further their education let alone get a decent job? It
boils down to what is the difference of having a IEP diploma(certificate of completion) and being a drop out
when you can not move ahead? I am sorry to be asking
so many questions about LD because I am LD and I care
about LD kids today.
In my days I was told by teachers, psychiatrists and my own parents that I have no right to an education and was told to give up on myself. This was in the 1970s.
Is it because the teachers did not care or did not have
the resources to know what to do to help underacheiving kids?

After months of researching graduate programs, I have finally settled on special education. However, some close friends are trying to talk me out of it. They say it's demanding, stressful, and just a bad job in general. However, I feel the benefits and rewards will outweigh the negatives. I am a somewhat sensitive person, and public speaking is difficult for me, but I am up for the challenge because I really want to teach children with special needs and make a difference. I think I can overcome those small things, if I know I will have a rewarding career. I also understand there is a shortage in this field? Is this cause for concern? Is this job really as bad as everyone is leading on?

My teenage daughter has the kind of dyslexia where characters and words and even entire lines of text move. She has somehow managed to compensate in the past, but class work is even more difficult now that she is in high school, and she is frustrated.

**BTW, our school district only tests for one form of dyslexia, so there are many dyslexic students who are not served by the schools here. Private testing + therapy is hardly affordable.

In the classroom, how do individuals with disabilities perform? Not enough people give them credit for trying...Though they have a disability, they're not any different than us as people, and I was just wondering how different do they learn in the classroom?
