Next year I would prefer to live on campus, because where I live is far to school, it takes me 1h 30 min to get there. So it limits my opportunities. Anyway most of the day I spend on campus and commuting only wastes 3 hours of day.. I am thinking about taking minor (additional classes) and perhaps join some club, don't worry about weather- in Chicagoland it matters). In order to able to afford, I have to take private student loan. However, my mother and sister are against it because my parents don't earn too much now and they don't wanna me to take additional debt. Of course I hate it, but once after graduation I find job it will pay off. Besides they think that I am immature for that, though I will be godfather of my nephew. My mother was opposing that even when I was applying for RA position, so I could get free housing. I would be on most weekend so she shouldn't be that worried about my absence When I should tell my family? before or after I apply for housing or get confirmation?

Also I would like scholarships. My GPA is 3.1 and I am a very well rounded student. I would like Gift Grants not just because you don't have to pay them back its a great way to start off debt free. So please help? Any ideas? suggestions?..I need scholarships/Grants/Financial Aid for College freshmen 2009-2010. I know Its early but If I don't start now I may not be able to get into college...

What's the best way for parents to save for college for year-old twins? Parents' income is high $40's. Don't want to end up having available financial aid cut because they've saved. How does the formula work? I know it's a long way off and rules can and probably will change - but how does it work now?

Any comments on such savings vehicles as 529 plans or UGMA accounts?

Other question - if grandparents want to put money away for the kids' college, what's the best way to do that so it doesn't just end up causing any financial aid to be cut? Families aren't rich, but aren't low income either. With two in school at the same time, finances will be..... interesting.

I'm paying loans for the Sallie Mae loans for my kids college educations. I'm paying ~$7500.00 in interest this year but I believe only $2500.00 is deductible when I itemize--is that true? Would I be better off getting a 2nd mortage to tie the interest to my house which would make all interest deductible?

thanks for any help

They're going to be helping and paying for maybe 8-10,000 a year, but I want to go to an expensive college and get a good education. I have good grades, I'm on a student exchange, I've been reasonably active in High School, though I don't stand out in any sports. My older sister can't get financial aid because my parents' income is too high, so there's no reason to suspect that when I go to college (september 2008) I'll get enough. Does anyone know what I can do or apply for as far as scholarships? There are always loans, but I'm more interested in not entering my life in debt.

My mom & step-dad are getting divorced and she hasn't been working since last July. She is my only financial provider and hasn't had any income for the past year, however, the fafsa and her income tax return do not reflect this. How can a Unusual Circumstances form change the EFC?

i was looking at private student loan sites and it seems they won't loan more money than the expected amount required to go to college.

my school says it costs about $11,600 a year to go. with my gi bill and fafsa i get that much now.

problem is it doesn't cover all my expenses, i had cancer last year and i am heavily in debt from it.

is there a student loan program that will allow me to borrow as much as i need? if i could just pay off some stuff i would be fine with the other money i get. the little doctor bills and bank loan i got to pay off my CC i ran up while having cancer is crushing me financially, i am trying my best to keep good credit.

and how good of credit does someone need to get the loan? i have no co-signer to help out and i don't work, my only income is from my gi bill and fafsa loan.

I was recently approved for a government grant for my college education. After getting off the phone with the specialist about my grant, I realized that I wanted funding for a used car versus my education since I would need the car to get to school.

If I am actually officially approved for the government grant for my education, but use the money for a down payment for a car instead would I get in some trouble? Would the government track my grant money and realize that I didn't use it for my education like I proposed? I didn't lie about it, it's just that the thought didn't cross my mind until I already hung up and the company processed my application through some national database. I don't know if they have grants for buying a car. I'm an idiot, I know. :) Any help would be great! Thanks!!!
