I'm in Grade 12, and every year so far I've had to read a book by Shakespeare. This year I've got to tackle King Lear. I don't understand why. My teachers and my parents say it is to appreciate the language back then and the language today, but there are better ways to appreciate English than to try and understand writing that is several centuries out of date.
I haven't gained anything from Shakespeare except a headache and frustration out of trying to understand the ridiculous language of the books. We will never write like Shakespeare did, there are plenty of wonderfully written modern books that accomplish far more, for me at least, than what Shakespeare wrote.
Or maybe I'm just a dumb teenager who is too used to writing as if they are on MSN all the time. Maybe it's just me.
