I'm currently thinking about attending UIC because I know it's a good school for engineering and it is in Chicago, but will I have a memorable and great college experience at this commuter school.

Go to Urbana instead. MUCH better engineering school and a more of the college experience you're looking for.

UIC engineering is the only college actively trying to increase its student population. The engineering program is considered to be a solid program. UIC is changing from a commuter school to a more residential school. Half of the freshman class live on campus. At UIC, your experience is what you make of it. The commuters tend to have a worst experience than the residential students. The commuter students like to complain about not meeting people, while at the same time don't join any activities.
If you are interested, you should come on down for a visit. You can sit in a class. You can meet with people in the admissions office and college of engineering.
