I'm a college freshman. I've always been a straight A student but for once, I want to have fun and explore different things in college. So, the question is, do grades in college still matter? I'm not planning to get D's or F's, but more like B's and C's. Will this hurt me in any way? No, right?

There are really three categories of grades in college:

1) 3.5 and better; exceptionally bright student.
2) 2.0-3.4; average student.
3) below 2.0; failed out

Staying above 3.5 for 4 years or more will get you better financial aid, job offers at some elite companies, and the better grad school admissions. Going under 3.0 may keep you out of grad school altogether. Most people don't go to grad school though so the 2.0-3.4 range is more than sufficient for their needs.

When all is said and done, you either graduated or you didn't. What's most important is what you learned while you were there (including social skills and work ethic in addition to the academics).

That said, most people who fail out of college can immediately point to their social habits as the underlying cause. You can have fun and stay over 2.5 or 3.0. Your ideas of Bs and Cs indicates a 2.5 or so -- as long as you don't plan on going to graduate school for a master's or of working for one of the top Fortune 500s then a 2.5 is "adequate".

So, will it hurt you in any way? Yes, it could. At this point your question to yourself is what you plan to use that degree for. If you think you may want a master's or law school or medical school or an elite job then you best reconsider. If you're just doing your time to get your "average" degree so you can get an "average" job then an "average" academic performance is all the ticket you need.
