In Chicago I have the right to access a teachers teaching credentials.I also have the right to check and see if a background check was done prior to hiring. Most schools are being held accountable these days and only a idiot will would hire a teacher without a background check. Our local school council which is made up of parents, teachers and community members screen all applicants from the crossing guard to the principle. Our applicants are checked to see if the have an order of child support as well as a credit check.Your sister has every right to attend school and obtain a degree in teaching but,the office of professional regulation which issues teaching licenses in illinois will not give her one because of her DUI offenses.I am just a parent not a teacher.

Yes they do background checks and fingerprinting. Since this is your sisters 3rd DUI I doubt she'll be able to get a job as a teacher. A friend of mine had a DUI and didn't tell her school. Her DUI came up on the background check and she had to write an essay about what had happened, but was able to get the job. I don't know if your sister will be that lucky because 3 is a lot especially for a teacher who is supposed to be a role model. Good luck!

Of course. Background checks are done on almost every employee now, even janitors. The cost for an employer to do a background check by internet is as cheap as $ 20.00. Its a good protection and investment for employers as employers can get sued if the employee does anything illegal and exposes the employer to liability in a lawsuit
If a teacher molested a student and the school district hadn't done a background check, the jury would rule against the the school disttrict and let the parents of the child enter the amount of the award on the school district's blank check

No. Most states do not. And is very sad. There are many cases pending at the moment. Some teachers have sexually abused students for more than 20 years and got by with it for that long. You know there are many that never reported them for fear of retaliation etc. Thankfully as adults now they are coming forward. I can not tell you how it devastates a child when they have been molested or raped. I was a child that endured that. And honestly I think the death penalty should be an option if not life imprisonment at the least. Because it literally ruins your life in many ways. Having a normal sexual life after that is next to impossible. As for your sister. She really needs help. If she doesn't then you and your loved ones should schedule an intervention. She is on a destructive path and God forbid she kills someone and or herself. At least you can live with the fact that you tried to help her. Good luck. Great question.

It depends a lot what school district you are in. They most certainly do background checks on Elementary School teachers where I am (Vancouver Canada) but I think that they are looking more for sexual deviancy or violent behavior. I can't say for sure if a DUI would constitute a grounds for non-hiring but to my knowledge most teachers drink.

If they don't, they certainly should. If your sister has a felony DUI she will not be hired anywhere. If she doesn't have a felony yet she still has a good chance.
By the way, I would not want a teacher with a history of alcohol related arrests any where near my children.
That's not saying anything against your sister, I've got a history of alcohol related arrests. I don't see my children. I don't want them growing up to be the drinker I am.

This probably depends on the state in which you live. I know that Delaware does a background check by taking your fingerprints and checking the child molester list. Call the department of education in your area for more information.
