Identify a specific element (image, word choice, poetic device, pattern, etc.) that serves to support and elaborate larger thematic concerns of the text.

Illustrate its place in the text (in other words, quote the line(s)/stanza where the element appears).

Interpret its persuasive function. How does the particular element work persuasively to underscore a key theme? Explain the thematic significance of the element. Develop probing and provocative interpretations. ANALYZE how the element contributes meaningfully to the text's motifs, concerns, obsessions, tensions, etc.

For My Daughter
David Ignatow
When I die choose a star
and name it after me
that you may know
I have not abandoned
or forgotten you.
You were such a star to me,
following you through birth
and childhood, my hand
in your hand.

When I die
choose a star and name it
after me so that I may shine
down on you, until you join
me in darkness and silence
together.

As in saying, "uh-huh" for "yes," responding with "huh?" if you don't know the answer or didn't hear the question, or saying "Huh!" instead of, "Wow, that's interesting!" or "You don't say!"

My daughter stumped me with this one.
Ten shiny new points to whoever gives the most logical answer! Anyone? Anyone?

They use it in front of every verb such as "I was like shocked... and he was like disgusted". It is used so liberally and wrongly. Even Singaporeans are talking this way.
