I'm a home-schooling parent but I but be able to offer a few words of wisdom.

Keep in mind that anyone who transfers schools or from homeschooling back to school usually has to play catch up. This isn't necessarily because they didn't learn enough in their previous educational setting just because schools introduce different subjects at different times.

World Book has listings of the typical course of study for each grade level at this website:
http://www.worldbook.com/wb/Students?curriculum
You might want to go through it see what you've covered and what you haven't. You can also consult with your cousin about what his class covered in the previous year and what they didn't.

To be honest it might be easier to make the transition into high school when everything will be new for everybody. 8th grade work is usually just a continuation of 7th grade work. Plus that extra year would give you more time to catch up on what you've neglected, although the biggest subjects to focus on are English (reading, grammar, composition) and Math.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do!

I personally did not deal with this, but my brothers did.

Both of my brothers were homeschooled for 3 years (one from 7th-10th) and the other from (10th-12th). We moved the third year though and my parents felt it would be best if they went back to school (as they both kind of slacked off a bit and my parents were worried they were not going to get the proper education). My school districts rule was that they both had to go back a grade though (so one went back in 10th grade and the other went back to 12th grade (when they technically should have been in 11th and graduated)).

I have to say that they LOVED being back in school though. Even though the younger one struggled a bit in the subjects he had slacked off in (mainly math) they loved being around friends again. It was hard for them at first but they really got to know the teachers and students. They actually became quite popular....and me being the younger sister... well I had to try and live up to that.

Honestly, it is up to you. Whatever you feel more comfortable with is best. Did you like school before you were homeschooled? If you didn't, why not? If things might be better now that you have moved ... then try it out! If you feel that you are better suited for homeschooling then stick with it!

In my family, my brothers thrived way more being back in school. They went on to great colleges and earned some nice scholarships. One was even voted homecoming king!

You just need to ask yourself what you think will be best though... after all, you will be the one in the situation!

Good luck!

If you are behind but do want to try out school, then I'd say you have 2 options:

1) catch up this summer and start this fall
2) catch up this school year and start next year

Not being caught up means that you'll find it difficult, which will make the experience less pleasant, plus people will be bound to link your lack of skills to your homeschooling and will look down on you and homeschooling.

My son started in public school then I homeschooled and he went back to public in 6th. He loved going back, although he missed the leisurely hours he could hold homeschooling. He found that hanging out with his friends all day was fun....the schoolwork was simple for him so it was like a breeze to finish schoolwork then hang out. He made A's and B's and had fun doing it.

mainstreaming back into a regular school from homeschooling is really hard. I've done it before and it was difficult because I was a little behind on my grammar and spelling, as it seems you are now... focus on your schoolwork as much as you can before you go back to regular school, you should be ready by the time fall rolls around if you work hard.

I used to teach 7th grade and some kids who have been in public school all their lives are far behind where the board of ed thinks they should be. Just continue your lessons, and when you go to school, ask your teachers to help you where you have problems, work hard and do your best. Anyone changing schools is bound to run into things they haven't covered or mastered yet. Good luck!

You could always give it a try for one semester. If it's too tough, you'll know you need to buckle down and do some serious work before high school. I wouldn't be surprised, though, if you found it was much easier than you thought it would be.

Best wishes!
