This phrase has been a synonym for everything from "ill and indisposed" to "financially embarrassed" and "drunk," and has even been a synonym for "the discomfort accompanying menstruation". It was first used by Ik Marvel (the pen name of American author Donald Grant Mitchell) in his "Reveries of a Bachelor" (1850).

One is that it is named after a mythical black figure called Queen Califia, and two is that Fra Juniper Serra who founded the Missions named it. He was from Mallorca and I hear that the word California, when broken down, roughly means the 'hot land that burns' in Catalan. Are either of these two explanations true? If not, does someone have the real answer? Thanks.

I was a nursing student trying to finish my bachelors. I started the nursing program on a bad note. My father was sick and had to quit his job. It really stressed my family out a lot. Out of the 3 classes. I was able to finish one of the incompletes over the summer. I couldn't do 2 of the incompletes over. My father died of cancer. We took him out of the state for treatment. I met up with my dean of nursing today. I had an issue with my professor for those 2 classes. I had to speak to the academic committee for her to agree to take my incompletes over. When my dad was getting more sick, I just stopped going to class and didnt notify anyone. The dean told me today that she doesnt blame my professor and that i was irresponsbile and that she is not going to support me..She thinks my story doesnt match up with when she was asking me for certain dates. I thought my professor probably wasnt going to give me an extension on the incompletes so I stopped going..How can I fix this situation

I'm 20 years old, did below average in highschool, and I haven't gone to college or into the work force. I spent the time after high school pursuing my own online business and figuring out what type of education I should get.

I want to go to school for business, but i'm afraid I won't be able to get into a top ranking business school, like NYU Stern or Columbia.

What will it take for someone in my situation to get accepted into a top business school and how can I best prepare myself?

Thanks,

See i am a student. And most of my grades r not passing grades exept 4 language arts.I got a C and for others they were lower. And i want a very very good paying job but i am not getting a good start.Do u think even though u don't have good grades and enough you know talent or whatever u want to call it.Education there. If u don't have good education could u still get a very good paying job. That can pay for all the bills, and car payments and still have money left over that u can spend on a bunch of other things?Tell me what u think and what could I do to bring up them grades!

Hello, I am attending an Early Childhood Program at my local community college and for a school assignment I have some questions that I need to ask an early childhood professional. Any profession that deals with children from birth through eight years old. If you decide to answer these questions for me if you wouldn't mind, please give me your first name and the place that you work. The questions I am asking are the following:
1. What problems do you face with the children in your program as a result of divorce?
2. What problems do you face with suspected abuse?
3. What do you as a professional do to help parents and children with these types of problems?

If anyone can please help me with these questions it would be greatly appreciated. The answers to these questions will help me in completing my early childhood education class.
