I reckon the idea of keeping the wind out of the cave or hut by blocking up the entrance with something of suitable size probably developed quite early on. The real stroke of genius was to invent the hinge so that the crude barrier would conveniently swing, instead of having to be lifted aside. That must have been quite advanced technology - my guess is that it would come fairly soon after the invention of the wheel, which also involves an object rotating around a pin or axle. Or, maybe the hinge came first.
As to "when", who knows? As has already been said, the Ancient Egyptians had them, but the Chinese were an early civilisation, too, so they could have worked it out.

Theres no telling who invented the door.It was probally done out of necessity like footwear, walking sticks or head covering.More than likely it was to keep someone or something out of a certain area than keeping themselves in. Good question. MKEN

William Bucklew Jackson invented the door in 284 B.C., in order to keep the wild goats at bay. This all happened in Greece, he later went on to invent the SUN, and WATER. However the goats ended up killing him while he slept one night.
Thanks for playing.

It was just some guy living in a cave, and he needed to stop nosy dinosaurs poking their noses in, so he invented the door?

I am not sure of her name, but it was a woman and she invented the door so she could scream at her philandering husband, "Don't let the door hit you on the way out!"

I believe it was Archduke Frederik Door.
It was invented in 1680 and was used mostly
for entering and exiting various rooms in a house.
It has since broadened to allow access to cars,
monkeys, and food storage cabinets.
