According to my teenage son, we are the only household in America without cable so I hope someone out there still remembers what rabbit ears are! Sometimes the reception is acceptable, but when it's not and I adjust the antenna, the picture always looks so good until I let go. What is the technical explanation for this?

I want to open up my TV to try and work on it, but I have heard too many bad things about high voltage capacitors inside them. Can anyone tell me a way of safely discharging the capacitors inside so that I can then go probing around to my heart's content.

Thanks for the replies about freeview picture quality. We appear to have an outside ariel but only the tv in the lounge is connected which is why I have such bad reception in my room. Can anybody tell me how I can connect the outside ariel to my room? There doesn't appear to be a cable connection point thingy (sorry-not very technical) anywhere.

MY TV IS NOT OLD, IVE HAD IT FOR LESS THAN TWO YEARS. TWO DAYS AGO A BLACK RECTANGLE APPEARED ON THE TV SCREEN NOT ALLOWING US TO SEE THE ENTIRE PICTURE. IT TAKES UP ABOUT 1/4 OF THE ENTIRE SCREEN. IT WILL NOT GO AWAY UNLESS YOU CHANGE THE CHANNEL AND THEN WITHIN A FEW SECONDS IT COMES BACK, ALWAYS IN THE SAME SPOT. IVE NOT MADE ANY CHANGES. WE HAVE DIRECT TV AND ITS NOT HAPPENING TO OTHER TVS IN THE HOUSE. WHATS THE CAUSE, IS IT WORTH PUTTING IN THE SHOP OR IS IT TOO BIG OF A PROBLEM OR TOO EXPENSIVE TO FIX? I HATE TO THROW IT AWAY, ITS THE LARGEST TV I OWN.

problem: we need 4 outlets fore DREAM, here in philippines and looking for a LNB with 4 outlets, sothat we can have 4 different receiceivers. if we buy a 4-LNB, made for ASTRA or EUTELSAT, can it be used also for DREAM?
Or, is an LNB specified for a special Sattelite?

I live in Ethiopia (East Africa). I cannot afford DStv and I am bored with Arabsat (Badr). Are there any other free-to-air satellite services that I can receive in Ethiopia (in the Ku band, not C-band mind you...)? If so, what is their azimuth, elevation, latitude...?

Please cite the source where you got this info so that I can get more info. Also, if you could research-and-indicate to me on how to install these satellites (I know the basics with installing Arabsat), I'll be very grateful and you'll be the winner.
