For Christmas I bought a 50" plasma at Costco, brand is Vizio - I'm very impressed with the picture, both in terms of clarity, color, motion resolution. It was also very inexpensive for what I got, and of course has Costco's unlimited return policy.

My buddy saw it and purchased the 40" model just a month ago - and the picture is really impressive at that size as well.

I realize it's not an LCD as you stated, but if you do your research regarding current LCD vs. Plasma technology, (combined with Costco's return policy), I thought the brilliance of the plasma display was a no-risk move.

Your mileage may vary, hope this helps.

I'd advise staying away from the LCD right now, the cost is just WAY too high. I have a 59 inch Sony Wega HD rear projection. Its only 10 inches deep and is lightweight. Also, te picture is just as good as an LCD, IMHO.
Also, keep in mind...they won't tell you this at the store...in order to enjoy a HD or LCD you have to have an HD commection. I don't care if you spend 10K on the best TV in the world, if you don't have an HD connection, the picture is going to suck.
