If not, why do they have to get so damn hot? What a waste!

They get hot because (1) the power supplies are designed without much regard to energy consumption and (2) the digital ones have to decode a digital signal which requires fairly powerful hardware - and this in turn generates heat, due to the processors not being very efficient. Although saying that, the old analogue cable boxes used to get pretty hot, but that might just have been inadequate ventilation. If you want to cool your box down then either install a heatsink and/or fan in it, or drill some holes in the top of the case to aid ventilation. I agree, though, it is a terrible waste of electricity.

What's more of a waste is the 5 points you used "asking" such a stupid question.

Next time try "Why do set-top boxes get so hot".

But I suppose you think you're wittier than that

No... but I strongly suspect they may be hotter than you think, and just may have been invented by 'big brother'!

What a neat way, to monitor us all inside our homes... since if it works one way, in collating and updating all that data for our sets, it's pretty easy to reverse the process, using hidden cameras and microphones to collate data on the viewer.

Especially with this labour government! Since they already monitor our emails and our telephones, with cameras on almost every street.

And foolishly, yes, I own one too!
