I did a lot of research before I plunked my $ down on a 50' Panasonic TH-50PHD8UK. It's not cheap, but it does the HD better than any of the competitors. I also find it better on the regular cable channels (some of the competitors, like Samsung, have a lousy picture on regular cable channels).

The best and one of the best sellers is the awe inspiring Pioneer Elite. From it's XGA 1280 x 768 resolution, Crystal Emissive semi glare resistant glass screen, to it's burn-in eating orbiter it's the perfect plasma. The Pioneer's come with a tuner box containing many of the components that slow a normal plasma down when their internal making the Elite run allot smoother, giving you blacker blacks and really boosting your contrast ratio.

Also try some consumer review sites, I never put much stock in Consumer Reports though because their a little behind when they put the report out. I've seen some high rated TVs become obsolete by the time some reports come out, and their rating system is a little sketchy.
