According to my teenage son, we are the only household in America without cable so I hope someone out there still remembers what rabbit ears are! Sometimes the reception is acceptable, but when it's not and I adjust the antenna, the picture always looks so good until I let go. What is the technical explanation for this?

Yep, I'm gonna say you become part of it, but the technical reason why is that we conduct small amounts of electricity.

You're unlikely to get anything with an indoor antenna, since you're about 21 miles from the major antennas (on Lookout Mt near Golden). I'm surprised you get KTFD. It may be that there's a repeater nearby. At 21 miles in a pretty flat area you shouldn't need anything extreme in an antenna. A small UHF/VHF antenna pointed due-west should do it. You'll definitely need VHF (chs 7-13) capability to get the ABC(7) and NBC(9) stations.

By touching the antenna, your body is actually becoming an extension of the antenna, increasing the area with which it is able to receive radio frequencies. This temporarily increases the efficiency of the antenna. Another trick you can try to improve the reception would be to elevate the antenna to a higher location if possible since this would reduce possible sources of signal interference (other buildings etc).

You become part of the antenna when you touch it, effectively making it much bigger.

See above for explanations but to remedy this, make your son pay for cable. Everyone wins!
