Cameras - November 2006

I have an old Olympus C-4040 digital camera that uses SM cards. Great camera but the SM cards get corrupted at the drop of a hat, especially when put into a card reader other than the camera. If I attempt to even view files on an SM card using a card reader, the card will become useless with the camera. I keep getting an error message with the camera telling me to format the card, which it tries but CANT do. Formatting the cards from a computer doesnt work either. I've seen websites offering to fix SM cards for a fee but I'm not desperate enough to try.

Is there any way to fix the cards myself? Would a local digital photography shop be able to do it for me?

Hi all, I'm moving to digital from film and I know that black & white film has less grain than colour film at the same ISO, but is this the same for digital photos? I am photographing indoor sports with a long telephoto so I want to maximise the image quality. On film I'd "sacrifice" colour by using very fast (1600 ISO) b&w film. Colour at this speed is much too grainy. If I do this on digital (I'm planning on getting a Canon 30d) is it as effective?

I would like some recommendations for digital cameras in the $250-350 range (U.S.) for my mom, who is not very tech savvy and needs some help with her photography skills. The camera must be easy to use (my mom needs help using a remote control, so it must be REALLY easy to use), but does not need lots of bells and whistles. Thanks in advance!

Something is wrong with the camera. it is a nicon coolpix 7600 ...when I go to the setup screen everything is fine but as soon as I try and turn the camera part on..it says batteries are exhausted. I have tried brand new batteries and it still does not work. Some one told me that if i update the firmware it might fix it
do you know what i can do to fix this problem other than firmware upgrade?

For Christmas I'm asking for the new Sony CyberShot DSCT-50. It's touch-screen, 7.2 megapixels, 3x optical zoom, 3 inch LCD screen, etc. I'll only be using this camera to take basic pictures, not extensive photography. It's good quality right? I mean it's high priced but that could just be because it's compact & just came out.

I want to know if this camera will work with the memory card I currently have for my Nikon Coolpix3200. I have a San Disk 128 Megabyte card and I want to know if I'll need a different card for the Sony, so I can ask for that with the camera too.

I want a new digital camera. I have the Nikon Coolpix right now and it is tooo slow for me. I have two toddlers and although the camera takes great pictures it doesnt do well with action. I am indoors alot so I usually rely on the flash. I cant afford to go overboard but I want to know what everyone reccomends.

I want to buy the Canon EOS but I have heard good and bad reviews, and I'm now indecisive. I love photography & had thought of buying this particular camera just for that purpose.
If you own one of these cameras, please tell me if it's any good or of your experience with it.
Should I buy it or not?
