Stay away from samsung... I have a canon powershot. I love it. It takes the best pictures and all my friends have digital cameras and they can't believe the shots I get. If I am using a 35 mm then I use my nikon. Nikon is great for 35mm. but when I want the convience of my digital and to carry around with me I love my Canon. You will pay more but you won't be disappointed. They also have great warrenty. My daughter dropped mine and it broke the zoom button and even though it was over 1 year old Canon fixed it free of charge and only 1 week. Great service, Great Product. You get what you pay for.

None. Samsungs are cheap because they're rubbish, the number of people on Yahoo Answers asking about a faulty Samsung is significantly higher than any other brand. You're also looking for too many megapixels, you need to be thinking 6-8mp unless you plan on printing poster sized photos, for which a crappy 13mp P&S is still going to fail. So in terms of brands, I now shoot Canon SLRs, Leica Rangefinders and have a Sony for ultra compact. For your average compact camera (not those stupidly small ones), I'd recommend Canon, Nikon and Panasonic. While if you're going for something ultra compact, nothing will beat the top of the Sony Cybershot T range, a regular award winner in the ultra compact class (I'm talking about a camera smaller than my phone). Also in terms of ergonomics I have found that you can't beat an SLR, but then I want to be able to change my shutter and aperture very quickly and beyond that not much else. But in terms of P&S I'd say Sony is quite pleasant to operate (as long as its not touch screen!) And Kodak is quite plain and straightforward. Sorry to shout this but its important. TEST THE CAMERA OUT YOURSELF, you are buying this camera, you need to be happy with it, I can only point you in the right direction, shops like Jessops and even John Lewis will let you have a play with the cameras.

Samsung and Panasonic are well-known for making electrical appliances (televisions, vacuum cleaners, toasters etc etc) NOT CAMERAS.
Canon is the brand I would recommend (they are the top manufacturer who have specialized in making quality optics for many years) first with film slr and now digital slr and compact digital cameras.
Look at one of the Canon SD models if you want very compact, point & shoot simplicity...or one of the newer A or G series models if you want manual control features as well.

Consider Sony, Canon, Nikon, and Olympus; not Samsung.

We own a Kodak and an Olympus digital camera. I like the Olympus best, but we own Samsung everything else pretty much, and that is our number one brand! Go with Samsung.

I got a Sony Cybershot for my Birthday - it is totally awesome. Easy to use, great features and super pics.

Depends on what you need. Don't try and be too flash and get features you'll never use.

I would consider any of them. Both are ok but no good enough. Try thinking about Canon, Nikon, Sony, Fuji, Pentax, Monolta these are all good...
