Still means that it takes plain pictures "in which everyone is still"...(joke), it is not a camcorder, but it does a bit of mpeg recording at great expense of the memory stick.
The dsc-s500 is a good beginners choice, it is running about $150, it is fast, good color balance, decent flash and it works with any AA battery in a crunch (vacation without your charger, I've been there) I use the Nikon d100 for wedding and such but I always carry my DSC w7 which I upgraded from the DSC w1, which m syster enjoys now.
The W7 runs about $300 but it is worth every cent.
Enjoy!

You best bet is to actually use the camera. It's a Sony and is 6MP so I wouldn't hesitate to say that it's probably a great camera, but the proof is always in what you think of the actual photos the camera takes. I suggest you go into the shop and ask to take a few photos.

A still camera is a device used to take photographs. Traditional cameras capture light onto photographic film. Digital cameras use electronics, usually a charge coupled device (CCD) to store digital images in computer memory inside the camera, which can be transferred to a computer for later processing.

A "Still" camera just means that it is not a video camera, but the DSC S500 actually does have a small movie mode.

Otherwise, I know nothing about this camera and I hope that someone who does will answer you.

I recommend looking for this kind of information on products on review Web sites, such as:

http://www.consumersearch.com/index.html
http://www.epinions.com/

Specifically, here is the Digital Camera section on ConsumerSearch:

http://www.consumersearch.com/www/photo_and_video/digital-camera-reviews/index.html

...and here are reviews of that camera by people who own it on Epinions:
