I want to buy the Canon EOS but I have heard good and bad reviews, and I'm now indecisive. I love photography & had thought of buying this particular camera just for that purpose.
If you own one of these cameras, please tell me if it's any good or of your experience with it.
Should I buy it or not?

Hi, sunshine.

I've been a Canon user for a LONG time, at the professional level. And although I do not own an XTi, the reviews I've read are fantastic (including some experience with other folks' units). It's, unfortunately, likely that the "negative" reviews you've heard about the new Nikon D80 and Canon XTi are probably from opposing fanboy camps that can't stand that the other has a new model...

Thus, if you have any questions, I'd be happy to answer you regarding bodies (XT, XTi, 30D, 1-series), lenses (L or non-L), and lighting...

I agree with Cap on this one. The XTi is a very good camera - I list two review sites in my profile that will confirm this - but it's surrounded by other models that are better value for money.
The previous model, the Rebel XT is NEARLY as good for $300 less ($515 for the body at www.BeachCamera.com), the Canon 20D is a recently discontinued model that's one step up from the Rebel line, and it currently sells for about the same price, and the Nikon D80 is slightly more expensive than the XTi but it has a larger viewfinder, a decent sized grip, and it's generally a more pleasant camera to work with.
You can find in-depth reviews for all of these models at the sites in my profile, too.

For about $200 more, you can get yourself a Canon 30D which is a better camera all around. Don't get me wrong tho, the Rebel XTi is a very good entry level DSLR. But for its price, I would either pay a little more for the 30D or Nikon D80 or pay less for the Rebel XT or the new coming Nikon D40 (available December). I just don't think the Rebel XTi worth its price.

The EOS rebellion TXI makes use of any of the Canon EF / EF-S lenses. The Canon EOS three hundred makes use of the Canon EF lenses. So the reply is certain. EF-S lenses, in spite of the indisputable fact that, can't be used on EF mount cameras and Canon designers have taken steps to substantiate that's bodily not plausible to mount EF-S lenses in this form.

My biggest quibble with the Rebels is that they lack a proper spotmeter. Read OMG's answer and check his links.
