I just reinstalled Windows XP Home with an Admin user and several Limited users. I spent a few hours installing several apps under the Admin user before using any of the limited users.

A screenshot of the error message and icon is available at:
http://img118.imageshack.us/img118/8205/errormo4.png
(If there is any way to link a pic here, let me know and I'll update the question)

When I log in to the limited user, a dialog box pops up. It's only message is "fAIL". A item appears in the windows taskbar with a icon I don't recognize.

Can anyone tell me any of the following:
1) What app does the icon belong to?
2) Is there any way to identify what process/program is creating that dialog box to troubleshoot/remove it?

And what are the similarities and differences between Linux and Windows and what are the pro's and con's of both these Operating Systems? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

My brother told me that linux is a great operating system but they have a bad problem with memory leaks? But windows does not have this problem. Something about linux allocates the memory (ram) used for programs, but it does not deallocate it when it is done. So over a period of time, the system gets slower. Is this true? I'm new to linux.

Everytime I use programs such as WinAmp or RealPlayer they override the preferences or defaults I have set for my file associations.
I know how to reset them, but it doesn't stop it happening again the next time I use one of those programs.
I prefer to use WindowsMediaPlayer for movie & video files but WinAmp for music files. It seems each program wants to be the default for all file types and doesn't like sharing! In the past I have overcome the problem by uninstalling RealPlayer and Quicktime but this stops me from opening some files on sites such as the BBC.
How can I stop this happening, simply? I only have Windows98SE and have never tinkered with the registry before.

how long did it take to learn the command line? are you able to use proprietary software with it? What if I don't like firefox, are there other browsers? Is ubuntu a good choice? Are you limited in any way by the open source software? I tried it one time before, and I'm used to the nice cushy g.u.i. from windows, and to me linux seemed kinda difficult to use. Will I get over this learning curve easily if I decide to make the switch and stick with it?

All computers have antivirus programs built into them. Then after 3 months you get all of these pop ups warning you to get more.
Is this really necessary? You aren't going to lose ALL protection if you don't purchase it are you? Need to know fast!!
