I have a 60GB FAT32 harddisk partition on a dual boot (Windows XP/Win98) PC. It has worked fine for 2 years. Now, following an improper shutdown and the resulting WinXP 'checking disks for errors' screen on startup, Windows XP can't even read the volume name and asks if I want to format the drive when I try to open it. Properties dialog shows Filesystem: RAW. However, there is absolutely nothing wrong with the partition as far as Windows 98 is concerned (verifies fine with scandisk), and Linux Live CDs such as SLAX also open the partition with no trouble. There is nothing wrong with the physical disk or XP drivers, since other partitions on the drive are fine even from XP. Is there any way to 'fix' the disc, i.e. persuade XP that it is fine, short of backing up everything and reformatting (not easy since I don't have any large HDDs to hand so I'd have to use a stack of DVDs).

I have several hundred music files on my computer saved on an external hard drive. Most are copies from my own cd collection, some are downloads from when I used to use p2p before arrests were being made. For fear of virus over the internet or backdoor file snatchers or any other bad / wrongful thing that can happen to files while connected to the internet, I have never turned on the external drive while connected to the net - until just a few minutes ago. I absent mindedly turned it on to listen to my music while here on answers. I got this error message that says something to the effect of 'can't play sound file - cannot find license'. Does that mean I won't be able to play my music again or did that only affect the one song I tried to play?

I have an Alienware Area-51 that I bought a little over a year ago with all the standard equipment. Nothing unusual. But when ever I use a graphics intensive program (games, 3-D apps, etc.) my computer beeps constantly. This is a system beep, not thru the speakers.

I'm sure it's a 1. Heat Warning 2. Power Warning 3. Who knows what. But I run all the diagonstics and everything is within the safe indicators.

I'd just like to turn it off cause it's a little bit annoying!

Thanks.

this picture was probably downloaded from the grandkids using the cpu, or taken off one of their games. we are using a HP Pavilion mx70, we bought used and no books came with it. we are able to change the screen saver picture to different pictures, but we are not able to figure out how to get rid of this picture. if we click on the side of the picture we can drag it to the side and the picture apprears to be narrower, but nothing we have attempted will remove it.

In Windows 2000 operating system, can you command your computer to turn off automatically after choosing shut down? I'm talking about when you go to Start->Shut Down->Shut Down, it loads for a while and then it says "it's now safe to turn off your computer", but I want it to automatically turn off WITOUT the need of pressing the power button but AFTER you choose the command "shut down". (you know the one in Windows XP, it automatically turns off when you choose shut down) Also without the need of downloading utilities.

btw, I'm not talking about the "hibernating" or "stand by" options.

Is there such thing? If yes, then can you give me the complete steps.

tnx in advance :)

I want an external hard drive to back up my music, photos, and documents. What kinds of things should I look for?

I'm not super techie so I'd love something that I can just plug in with a USB or something, then transfer over a few folders.

Are there any brands that are especially good?
