I want an external hard drive to back up my music, photos, and documents. What kinds of things should I look for?

I'm not super techie so I'd love something that I can just plug in with a USB or something, then transfer over a few folders.

Are there any brands that are especially good?

Also, how much should I expect to pay?

Consider a drive that uses USB in order to keep installation easy. It will also allow you to daisy-chain the devices as your needs increase. Since you mention back up of photos and music I wouldn't start with anything less than 250 GB (gigabytes). That should give you plenty of room to get started and monitor things as your storage increases. I have Western Digital drives which have served me well and ship with Retrospect Back Up software. Look for them at places like CompUSA and TigerDirect.

Hey Paike...well when buying any external HD, your first need to meet your system "requirements" because like an external hard drive, it uses a USB Port(s) and in your case having an external hard drive, you might need a " USB2.0 Hi-Speed 4+1 Port PCI Host Card " for best and fast data transfers if you won't like waiting around to send a large file(s) to a external HD.
( If the link don't work, just go to www.amazon.com and search for usb2.0 Port PCI card.

I have 2 exturnal hard drives both use usb and they are very unreliable because the usb connection is not very good I would recommend just using cd/dvds.

price for external hard drives usually depends on how big the hard drive is, the speed at which it can access data(rpm), and manufacturer.....
I would do some reasearch at http://www.newegg.com to see which one would suit your needs
