Ad-aware and Spybot Search & Destroy are the top 2 tech site recommended applications.
But prevention is key in the first place.
McAfee Site Advisor is a tiny program that runs in the background of your browser. (It won't slow your browsing). It tells you before you click if the websites have viruses before you even enter. This way, you can make informed choices as you surf. It's made for the Mozilla Firefox browser, but you I think you can get it for IE. Good sites come up with green checks and bad sites come up with red checks. It even tells you if the site is linked to malware and what the spyware names are. I wish I heard of it sooner myself. I just found this a few weeks ago and I love it! And yes, it's free!!

Spyware Blaster and Spybot Search and Destroy are the only two free programs that feature spyware prevention. Anti-virus programs do little against spam and Adawares prevention program costs money.

AVG is a great Anti-Virus. However, Spybot Search and Destroy and Lavasoft's Adaware are great spyware/ adware removal programs.
All three programs can be downloaded from download.com

AVG.... WWW.download.com and then Type in AVG.... Its free, is good, I use it, its not crap! Better then norton and WAY better then macaffie.
