With all this technology today, why are black boxes still being used? Can't they just develop something that stores the data on a computer remotely (or is that already being done?) Does that mean if they don't find the black box, there is no way of getting that informtion through another source?

I love flying and I heard that many commercial pilots earn a great salary, especially for the big airlines like Delta, but how long does it take to get a commercial pilot's license (in the U.S.)?

Also, if possible, how much does it cost (by an average estimated range) to get a commercial pilot's license?

As cars can run on gas power which is cheaper why cant aeroplanes. Or is it something to do with weight to ratio problems.

Hi guys and to all of you who answered my funny question re the above.
Just to put things straight, I have never been inside a planes loo nor have I ever seen inside one. I don't fancy using a toilet after 150 or so bums on an aircraft have used. I am disabled, also a large gentleman as I suffer from many disabilities including strokes and now renal failure, so before my flight it's into the airports loo, and as my flight times have only been 2 hours max I don't have the urge to go, infact now I have kidney failure I can virtually fly to America without a single visit to the loo. With ref to the old lady who went in and came back out of the aircrafts toilet and shouted down to the hostesses that the window was open, I was approx half way up the aircraft sitting on the left side, and I still swear blind that is what she said etc, but as one guy who answered me saying surely she didn't think the front left cabin door was the loo!!! from where I was I swore she said window .

I was flying to Scotland on an Easy Jet flight from Stanstead, An old lady got up and went to go into the loo, and as she went in she came straight back out shouting down the aircraft to the busy hostesses I cannot use your loo as the window wont close.
Who the hell is going to see her bum Jesus?

I've had some pretty horendous experiences with Southwest airlines flying - i couldn't really fit in their seats, and they weren't very helpful about it saying that I should have bought another seat! - and it's been ages since I got in plane and I'm quite a bit wider now. What's the best airline if you're are bigger girl?

Where would be the best place in the world to do flight training? I already have a private pilot's license and would like to continue on with my training, but I just can't afford it, especially with the rising costs of oil and fuel here in the U.S. Would it be advisable for me to relocate to an oil-rich Middle-Eastern country such as Jordan or Saudi Arabia for this purpose? (having already lived for two years in Central Asia, I'm prepared for the geographical displacement and culture shock)...or should I just tough it out here in the states?

It seems as if their aircraft seems to mess up. On our way to Dulles, the steering got stuck (during the pre-flight check) and we ended up on Delta (thank goodness--much better service). On the way back from Dulles, we were stuck with Northwest. Everyone was on board and the electricity kept cutting out and they couldn't start the jet engines, so we had to disembark and get on an alternate plane. Could this be fallout from the mechanics' strike a year ago? Also, the Northwest flight attendants acted like they had chips on their shoulders. We are flying Delta or United from now on, no matter how expensive it is.

It is made clear in airline safety instructions that high heeled shoes need to be removed in an emergency landing, but I have heard conflicting information about whether or not everybody has to remove their shoes, regardless of whether they have heels or not.

I suppose in an emergency, the cabin staff do not have time to check people's shoes and it might be easier jsut to make everybody take their shoes off.

Does it vary with airlines?
