At cruising altitude they can do approximatelly 900km/h. However, this is the airspeed (ie the speed through the air); if there is a tail wind the wind velocity will add to the airspeed of the plane and produce a higher ground speed. Hence, when you fly from America to Europe the flight is quicker because of the almost permanent westerly winds.

Depends which one you're talking about, i've been on a Boeing 777 that was doing 615mph on a flight from Chicago to Heathrow.

I was on a flight to Paris in an Airbus A330 at 38000ft and on the display it said 653mph

it depends on the plane and depends on whether you have a headwind or tailwind.....probably 450-500 miles an hour average
