Oh yeah, it used to be OK.

Then smokers were relegated to the rear rows of the aircraft.

Then, and believe what you want this is the reason, airline operators realized they could reduce costs by cutting down on the air being circulated through the cabin. They immediately got on board with all the health folks to get the ban put in place. I have been seated within 2 rows of smokers and with proper ventilation I couldn't smell their smoke. I flew countless times in my career, after they turned the no smoking signs on I was infected with some airborne bug or another about 2/3 of the times I flew. The air in some commercial aircraft is almost stagnant.

When they turned the lights on, I told my wife to watch out, there would be all sorts of altercations in flight because someone or another was having a nicotine fit. In the first two weeks there were over 2 dozen such incidents that made the news. That isn't counting the ones I saw cross my desk.

Yes, smoking used to be allowed on airline flights. It was banned a few years ago. The air in an airplane cabin is recycled. Flight personnel had to constantly breath in air contaminated with cigarette smoke. It was determined that constant breathing in of this diluted second hand smoke led to much higher incidences of cancer in flight crews. Therefor it was eventually banned from all airline flights.

Not only on airplanes, but people smoked everywhere. Newscasters used to smoke on television while delivering the news, people on talk shows used to smoke while being interviewed, and gas station attendants used to smoke while filling your tank.

The tobacco industry had power, they even were able to get packs of cigarettes put into C-rations for our military.

Yes. But with the world going anti smoking it was banned on most airlines. It also causes a fire hazard.

Back then the small hole in each window was back from all the smoke. Sickening

Yes. In fact, early pressurized planes usually got better at holding air as time went on because tar from people smoking filled up the microscopic holes in the planes fuselage, just like it did to their lungs.

Many of the passengers used to smoke on airplanes.
It was sickening, specially for non smokers.
