does anyone know about the new tax thing this year? Where we can not file taxes until like april or something like that? Does that mean what we work in jan feb and march will all go on our 2007 tax return or on 2008? my roommate told me he heard something about it on the news the other day. I'm looking forward to my tax return in like jan or feb, and this has me a little freaked. if anyone knows about this or has even heard anything about it, please let me know asap. thank u very much.

In any state whose sales tax is over 7%, should we lower the sales tax? To 6%-5%? If you do or not think so, explain your reasons.

Hi,
1) I am planning to buy co-op in NY. I will be the sole owner for this apt. My parent is going to help me put down $40000 as downpayment(it will be like a personal loan to me). It's going to be a bank check make payable to the seller of the co-op. (I am putting down additional $35000 myself). Will this transaction get reported to the IRS. Does it effect her or me in anyway?

2) My brother just wrote me a personal check for $10000.00 as a gift. If i deposit this personal check from him, is it going to be reported to the IRS??
thanks very much.

1) Are you able to use someone as a dependent if they have stayed in your house, basically rent free a whole year BUT they receive their mail at another address? I know there are other things they must qualify but lets say they pass all other qualifications for a dependent and you are wondering about this one.

2) Are you legally bound to notify someone if you are claiming them as a dependent? I know that sounds shady but theres a person who fits all the qualifications of a dependent BUT I believe they would try to bribe me if I told them I was going to list them as a dependent. I know this person, they would say the only way I let you use me is if you give me x percent of the return you get.

Alright, I just found out that I owed taxes for two years (2003, 2005) and they are going to small claims court. I have found the W2's just a minute ago and they were not turned in because I thought they were my copies and believed that the payments were taken care of. I guess not. Since it has been taken to this point, can I just go in and file now (go to the office give them the w2's) or do I have to wait for court? I would rather get this done and over with BEFORE that. Please let me know ASAP.

Worried.........

I have a wedding dress that retailed new for $5k, but if I were to try to sell it now (9 years later), I could only get $200 for it (on ebay). if I were to donate it, how much could I write off? Conceviably if I were to find just the "right" buyer, it would be worth at least $1500, but most consignment stores won't even think of selling a wedding dress that is older than 1 year. And it could take me years and a lot of work to find the right buyer.

For teachers in the 'know' or Tax experts only!: Can you receive Social Security and a teachers 403b pension simultaneously?

My mom (who worked for the phone co. for 30 years) has been a teacher for the last 15 years and is being told she cannot collect on her 30 years of SSN AND a teachers pension (works for a Cal State University) by other friends. Is this TRUE? How does the 'teacher penalty' work?

I'm on disability and my children are receiving benefits, these benefits are be used to pay 90% of my required child support. I have three children. The divorce decree states I can claim 1 child on even, 2 children on odd yrs. as long as I'm current on the child support...which I am. I'm being told by ex-wife that her account is stating that because the soc secuity benefits are paying for the support, I should not be able to claim the children on my taxes because soc. sec. is paying the child support amount. Is this true? She wants me to allow her to claim ALL 3 kids on her taxes or she will take me to court for this and other issues!

If we eliminate some tax writeoffs, wont that provide some more income for the government? Its no secret that during tax season, people search for as many write offs as they can to avoid paying more taxes or to get a bigger refund check. If we eliminate some of them(not all of them), would that help get the Government in the black or perhaps they can put the extra money into the social security fund? I dont know, just trying to come up with ideas.

hello, my fiancee is planning to file 1099 taxes. I was wondering for whom it is better to claim our child, me or him. I worked on a part time basis last year so my income is less than his. Which one of us would get a better refund, if any. I also go to school too.
