The number of allowances that you are allowed to claim depends on additional factors your question doesn't list - age of child and your income, deductions, adjustments, and credits - these can qualify you to take additional allowances. There are worksheets with the W-4 to calculate these.

You start with one for each person who will be on your tax return for an exemption, so you should be safe claiming 3.

If your spouse works, or if you have significant income in addition to your job, you might have to claim fewer exemptions to be sure you don't have to pay at tax time.

That question really depends on a mix of the questions that were kind of thrown out in other comments. Were you married at the end of 2012 if so then no you would need to either file Married filing jointly or married filing seperate. The father in law cant claim your wife as a dependant if you were married at the end of 2012 and if she is a student then you are better off filing married filing jointly.

the fewer you claim now the more you will get at the end of each year. You can claim up to 3 right now and that will make your paycheck bigger each week. I would maybe divvy it up and claim 1 right now and three at tax time.

3 is correct.

You claim yourself always! = (1 )
You claim your wife, if you plan on filing jointly. = ( 1 )
You claim your child. = ( 1 ) ($1,500 back per child on tax return)
----Total---- ( 3 )

BTW, I claim 4 *G*
