I filed chapter 7 bankruptcy at the beginning of this year. Most of it was credit cards. Will the amount that was discharged be considered income and will i have to pay taxes on that amount when filing my 2006 income tax return. I also reside in Alabama, if that means anything.

I thought when you reach age 70 you can make as much money as you want without losing your social security benefits. And if you do not have other income do you have to still file income taxes

and they sent me a check with some amount witheld for estimated income tax and the additional early pension payout tax that would apply to my tax return this year, will the company send me a tax form showing the amount I got and what was witheld so that I can use it for my taxes this year? I got a letter with the check that indicated the check amount and the witheld amount but I have misplaced it. I know that tax forms are sent out on most things even when you get a statement like a bank account or paycheck. Will I get a tax form from my former employer (got the pension check in february) or do I need to call the pension dept to get a duplicate of what they sent me? It is a large retail corporation.

As a sole proprietor, I am receiving commission checks the last week of december 2006 and some I will receive the first week of January 2007 (but they were written and mailed the last week of December).
If I deposit all of them in January 2007, even though they were written and sent in 2006, does this income go on my 2006 or 2007 tax return?

My 10 year old son lives with his father and step-mother. I have paid child support all of the year of 2005. My son's father is on disability and therefore cannot file a tax return. However, my childs step-mom did work PART of the year and now is saying that she is going to use my son as a tax deduction on her returns. I have always used my son and this will really mess things up if I don't get to use him. So who has more of a right to use the deduction. Step-mom or myself? Also, what would happen if we both used him and how long would it take for this to be noticed?

If I had $10,000 in income at the end of a year, which would be wiser to do. (1) Purchase more inventory and if so, would I have to pay taxes on that? (2) Pay taxes on the income. (3) Purchase assets?
This is based on a company in Florida which buys and resales merchandise that is shipped mostly out of state.

some people have told me I don't have to claim it at all, but I think I am supposed to. Is it "other income" or "unearned income" or what? I do not receive any year end tax documents for it (like a 1099). Thanks for any advice.

We had his kids stay with us for the summer this year and their mother payed us no support. We had them for three months and had to pay child care costs of course. I love his children dearly, but the situation put us into a serious financial mess and we are still trying to keep our head above water because we weren't financially equipped to take them on with no support. I know he can't claim them as a dependant - we didn't have them long enough, but is there some releif from paying their childcare if we have the receipts? I'll take any help I can get.

There is a defunct company that I wish to buy. The company has $400,000 of IRS taxes past due from the year 1998. The taxes are due to non-payment of payroll taxes to the IRS (form 941 filings). The IRS has a lien and judgement on the company which is no longer operating and is in mothballs. If I purchase the company, can I negotiate with the IRS to get the 941 liability dismissed for a nominal amount?
