I started donating alot this year to our Goodwill, and I even have to drive 30 mi to do it. I have $750 in receipts for this year. But the tax law changes require me to have an appraisal for anything over $500 next year. Goodwill doesn't do it. So how in the heck do get an appraisal for donations like that? I live in a rural area also, so I'm not even sure we have someone/thing on our area... where would I even start?

Hi, All,

I earned interests both on my checking account and High-Performance Money Market. I received a report from the bank (cannot remember the type of form, something like 1099...)of the total interests I earned for year 2005. When H & R tax preparer helped me with the filing of tax return, I asked if I need to pay tax for the interests earned and showed her the report. She didn't even look at it and said I don't need to. I just want to make sure that for a resident alient, do I need to file tax on my interests earned on checking/HPMM/CD? Thanks a lot.

I left my husband before Dec. 1st. Can he file taxes this year and claim my son, and myself on his tax returns? Is there any way I can alert the IRS that he may be attempting to claim people who aren't his dependants? Is this tax fraud?

I bought a car this year (used) and paid all the registration, loan processing, license, tire and a whole bunch of other taxes and fees.

Are any of these qualify for a tax write-off? Thanks.

Forgive me if this sounds like a stupid question but:

1) Could my federal and state tax refunds be greater than the amount I paid in?

2) Doing my taxes (prelimnary) I am taking some deductions and amount is growing far past my total taxes paid for the year.

Thanks.

If a person holds a first mortgage on the sale of an investment property, then how does the State or Federal Goverment for that matter assess the capital gains rule for payment purposes? I realize the initial amount and any improvements is deducted but I'm refereing to any amounts of profit subject to the capital gain law. Thanks for any help you can provide
