If I mail them today, they won't arrive till Tuesday, Jan 2nd... or I could drive to City Hall to drop them off. Do they normally send a receipt indicating the "received date"? or how does anyone know when they were received?

As to whether they are late from a property tax perspective, that will be based on the laws of the assessing jurisdiction. I have seen either actual receipt by 12/31 and have seen postmarked by 12/31.

As to whether you can deduct the taxes on your income tax return it is postmark but this being 12/29 I would go to the post office and send the payment and pay the small fee for proof of mailing.

If your taxes are due by 31 December, the payment normally must be in the tax collectors hands on the 31st. That's the way it works in MO. If it's not paid by the due date, the penalty will be assessed. I'm making the drive to the country courthouse today.

If they are due by December 31st, they will be late if you mail them today. They don't go by the postmark. Go in person and get them paid in timely fashion.
