My husband died suddenly a month ago. I don't know what he paid for some of the stocks he sold last year and I don't know how to find out. He always did the taxes. Does the IRS give you any breaks in this situation?

Here is a scenario: A company decides to have newly constructed homes built on a land they own in January of 2006. A couple decides that they want to buy one of the homes that are to be built and signs an agreement of purchase that same month. The home is not constructed and they cannot close until December of 2006. So the couple can only have access to the home from December of 2006. Then February 2007 comes and the property tax bill for 2006 arrives. In your opinion, whose responsibility is it to pay that bill? and why? has anyone ever experienced this?

For example: let's say Mary, who is 22 lives with her parents and is going to college full time. She also works, and donates a lot of money to charity, has a significant amount of gambling losses, some employee expenses, etc, such that her itemized deductions are higher than the standard single deduction.
However, since she is a dependent, are there any strange rules governing dependents itemizing? Is it allowed at all?
Thanks

If so, how do you do it and why? We are having a discussion here at work and was wondering what is the correct answer. I understand, you still have to file 1040 but will you get back your withholding tax? Some say that is not true while I say it is. I'm sure the "free income" only happens to a certain type of people.

My home needs a new roof and I was also thinking of upgrading both bathrooms in my house. I really dont want a loan so I am considering taking money from my 401k and I am aware of the tax implications. Does the IRS allow the cost of home improvements such as what I am looking to do to be written on on my tax return?

If I have rental property, why do i have to deduct my mortgage interest on schedule A for the unit in which I live and then deduct the tennants portion of the mortgage interest on Schedule E?

Why not put it all on Schedule A? Is there a different calculation used between A and E?

This is a tough question I know. Thanks for any insight!

No property.
No money for investments.
Many people with personal vehicle.
No home for home improvements.
If I had kids your tax dollars would be paying for them.
No money for education.

The easiest way to get a tax credit or higher deductions seems to be going into debt.

Am I misguided?
Is it just me?

No comedians please...
If you can't relate... don't answer the question.
