If so, how do you do it and why? We are having a discussion here at work and was wondering what is the correct answer. I understand, you still have to file 1040 but will you get back your withholding tax? Some say that is not true while I say it is. I'm sure the "free income" only happens to a certain type of people.

As my husband is in the military we have had some overseas income. It depends where overseas. And typically if a company has still taken a federal withholding you owe that tax and will not get it back.

Not if you are a US citizen. The exception to this is that military pay while serving in a combat zone can be excluded from taxable income - somehow this sounds fair to me!
