Okay tax people, your knowledge is requested! We built a house in 2006. Recently, we paid $300 for an inspector to come out and perform all sorts of tests to certify it as an Energy Star certified house by the EPA. It passed and the inspector told us to look into tax credits. Anyone know a good place for me to get information on this - or possibly anyone know it off hand?

I'm single, self-employed, doubtful and scared of audit if I claim a home office, travel a lot for work (car, plane, hotels), have to eat on the road a lot, but usually alone, have a 401(k), member of professional associations, medium credit card debt, minor bits of work equipment, moving from Los Angeles to New York this year.

I welcome general hints but especially interested in links to more complete resources.

I've always just filed for myself but this year I get the earned income credit and I can claim head of household and claim my daughter and I don't know how to do it myself... I've heard that H & R Block take like $300 dollars from your return... what company would you suggest that does it correctly but doesn't charge an insane amount of money? (300 doesn't sound like a lot but if I'm only getting 2000 or less back, it makes a difference)

Do I have to put a dollar value amount when you recieve donated items (not cash) to your non-profit organization?

Or do I just send a tax letter stating what was donated?

Do I have to list everything? As we have recieved a lot of small household and construction items.

The Times today has details of a bonus system operated by the Treasury where taxmen can get bonuses of up to £2000 (probably tax free !) if they can maximise their tax take.

I know we can claim our co-pays, medicine and supplements that are prescribed by our doctor, and specialty diet items prescribed by our doctor due to food/protien allergies and intolerances, but is there any other breaks other than those that we can get or other areas that we can claim. Its been a tough year and we need all the help we get! Thanks.

We have looked the information up on the IRS website and also H&R block but not too clear on this. It talks about 'gifts received' but nothing about cash money...Do you have to claim money you received as inheritance? say to the tune of $40,000, or is it considered a gift and not taxable? Thanks for your help!
