I've always just filed for myself but this year I get the earned income credit and I can claim head of household and claim my daughter and I don't know how to do it myself... I've heard that H & R Block take like $300 dollars from your return... what company would you suggest that does it correctly but doesn't charge an insane amount of money? (300 doesn't sound like a lot but if I'm only getting 2000 or less back, it makes a difference)

You are probably perfectly capable of doing the tax return yourself without having to spend a penny. For those who qualify, the IRS has partnered with various private online e-file providers to offer free electronic filing of tax returns. These various programs are well-known for having very thorough online interviews that can get you all that you are qualified for without having to pay an arm and a leg to a preparer. Check the website below starting January 16th.

Like Mr. Zimmer, I would highly encourage you to try Free-File through the IRS website. The software asks you questions in plain terms and fills out all of the forms for you. It's basically like filling out a survey and doesn't cost a thing.

Your tax return is not submitted to the IRS until you finish with it and review it. If you try it and don't feel comfortable with it, then just don't submit it.

If you're set against trying it on your own, then I would highly recommend contacting an enrolled agent or CPA to prepare your tax return. There is no licensing requirement for a person to charge you money to prepare your tax return, so you could easily wind up paying someone who knows nothing about taxes to prepare your return. Enrolled Agents and CPA's, however, have accountability to the NAEA and the state CPA board so they have vested interests in preparing correct tax returns.

You can find a CPA through www.aicpa.org or an Enrolled Agent through www.naea.org. Good luck!

H & R block is extremely expensive and not worth going to. You can either check your phonebook for a local tax preparer who probably wont charge you more than $75 if they are a reasonable person, or you could buy software for under $50 to download to your comp so you can do it yourself. I do my taxes online at taxact, and they charge me $20. Be sure to research each of these before you commit to someone to do your taxes.
Whichever option you chose, you can get your refund back in almost the same amount of time as H & R block can because your other options also e-file, which is just as fast, without the high cost.

good luck :)

One other option you can look into is the VITA program. It is a program sponsored by the IRS where volunteers prepare tax returns for free. When I lived in California and volunteered for the VITA program, the tax preparation was done by accounting students at San Jose State University, and reviews of the prep work was done by public accounting professionals such as myself.

I have worked for one of this company and let me tell you, they are all almost the same. They hire a bunch of people just for the tax season. They provide them with a quick tax course. So, the different is not going to be in the company, but in the person who is going to do your taxes. Try to sit with somebody with certain experience and if it's possible with some extra tax knowledge in addition to the company's course.

jseah114 gives good advice by suggesting VITA. You can find more info at irs.gov - type VITA in the search box. There's most likely a site near you. Preparers have formal training and have to pass a test (and it's not an easy one) - and the service is FREE.
