If people paid a flat rate then the ratio of tax paid would be fair to all. The more you make ---- it would still result in more taxes . Plus, many people cannot even itemize unless they have a high mortgage or other high payments.

It also would save many people the cost of even filing for a refund. If your employer withheld 10 percent during the year and that all the taxes required ---- there would be no expense on the part of a government agency or the taxpayer to file a tax return. What do you think ???

I never owe. I have always gptten like 1000 dollars back every year. But because I am behind on student payments, they always take it anyways. So for the past 2 years I haven't bothered. I want to file again but what are some repercussions of my past. I don't make that much anyways. I really am a small fish.

All of my work this year was through a temporary agency. I am an "employee" of the agency and receive a W-2. However, they don't cover expenses like health insurance and parking. I pay these myself. Can I write these off on my taxes or can you only take itemized deductions if you receive a1099 as an independent contractor?

Im using Turbotax to file our taxes this yr for my new husband and I. Ive just done my own but now that Im married, we are filing jointly. So I went to the Turbotax site to buy the program and I was going to be the deduction maximizer but I see there is one for people who invest and declare their earnings from stocks and bonds etc. My husband has a Charles Schwab acct set up through his company for his 401K. Its managed by them and gets automatically diversified. We dont know much about how it works but its growing so we dont worry too much about it.

Do we declare its growth as an earning? And how do we find out how much it grew in 2006 alone? Would the investment program be the best one to buy as opposed to the cheaper version?

I had started to work in NYC "under the table" for the first couple of weeks. Then my employer asked me for my s.s. # and how many exemptions I was claiming, then witheld taxes each pay period. I told her I needed to fill out a W2 with my signature, but she never provided one. I don't have any pay stubs because I received only checks without details of the witholding. What should I do? If she is not reporting it to the IRS, I want my money back. If she is, how can I receive a W2 if I never signed one? Do I need to file a complaint against her?

A flat tax.....federal sales tax....or keep it the same.
Or is there a better way.
I believe the federal sales tax would be better because the wealthy tend to buy more costly items and would end up paying more.
And explain your reason for your answer.

Can a preparer efile directly through the irs for free? I work for a company preparing taxes, but we can only do 2 free returns per year. I have lots of friends and family that would like me to do their taxes for them and I would feel bad charging them especially what the company I work for charges. What are some other options if it is not free?

I need to take a drug test for my job tomorrow morning. The last time I smoked marijuana was on December 3. I was a fairly heavy pot smoker, several bong hits a day...I had cut back about two weeks before I totally stopped. The last day I smoked was December 3. HELP! (I don't have time to take any drinks or potions!)

I get a lump sump payment from my employer that is meant to cover mileage and labor pay for emergency service calls I perform. The mileage varies on a case-by-case basis, but the payment and tax withheld are always the same amounts. The call detail report I submit for the payment makes no mention of or provision to record mileage amounts. I also wonder how I should handle this on my income tax.

For a 1099 contractor during 2006, is the business expense calculated from schedule C be counted as "credits" or "itemized deduction"?

I'd like to use the standard dection, because stanadard deduction is higher than itemized deduction. If I do that can I write off business expense as "Credits" on line 9 of Form 1040-ES to reduce my estimated tax?
