i have a bbt checking account, with online banking.. My current balaance is higher than the avalable balance.. There are many transactions that haven't showed up on the actual statement.. So is that why the available balance is smaller? B/c the purchases have already been deducted, just not shown yet??

My wife rolled her 401k into an IRA 10 years ago (we are no where near retirement) and the money has been sitting there untouched for years. If we take the money and close the IRA, what are the tax implications now (aprox. 35% of money?) and when we do our taxes for 2007? It is not alot of money and I contribute fully to my 401k

$8,000 is to open a ROTH IRA for me and my wife. The remaining $17,000 is to invest in mutual funds. I want to invest in stock with moderate risk, with long term earning potential (retirement) and no load fee. Any suggestions? Thanks!

I am considering buying a membership to a warehouse store. If you are a warehouse shopper, do you find that it saves you money buying in bulk, or do you wind up throwing food out because you cannot consume it quickly enough? My fiance and I are a childless couple with a dog and spend about $230 a month on all Walmart items which includes the occasional belt/ socks, etc. Do you think we could do better at a bulk buy store?

For example, an ad in a magazine said something like "Make up to $465 per day mailing postcards."

I would guess it really pays something like 1 cent per mailing, and you would have to send a few thousand a day to make anything worthwhile.

Being my first job, I have little experience. I currently make around 45k but I get OT, which currently adds ~12.5%. Coming up to a review later this year, it is possible that they will make me a manager that will take away my OT pay.

I'd expect my raise to be more than the "so far" typical 5% but what if it is only 10%...I'd be making less money.

Is this common? I know that I can negotiate but asking for a 17% raise seems pretty extreme (12% to make what I currently make + 5% as a raise).

Any tips? Thanks.

I have been in a relationship with a railroader who seems financially bogged down by his ex and their 2 kids. He plans to retire in 5 yrs and says he will be set financially with railroad retirement. He hasnt really saved anything for his retirement and I am afraid his ex wife will come in to claim a share of the benefits.
I am 12 yrs younger than he and I dont want to marry him if its going to ruin me financially. I guess what I am saying is I do not want to support a man who made bad financial decisions and is dependent on me to pay his medical bills and support him because his ex wife has 1/2 his retirement and still has her finger in the pie so to speak. He says she is not entitled to retirement from him because she has re married.
He has health problems. Does the railroad continue to insure him or will he have to purchase his own insurance after retirement. We dont talk about it because he plays stupid and acts like he doesnt know the answers. Any helpful suggestions?

I currently work for the Union Pacific railroad, I don’t completely understand the 2-tiered railroad retirement. Can anyone help better explain it to me. The only people I can talk to work under the old Southern Pacific agreement and fall under TPA. My question is this:
If I work for 30 years and retire exactly at 60 years of age and never make more than 50k a year what should my retirement look like per month or yearly. I know it goes off my 3 best years but that doesn’t really help my much. If you know what is the average retirement for a conductor (I am a conductor)
Thank you very much for your time and answers.

I am single, independent, with a good job and a degree and I am tired of this life. I see so many unmarried women with kids on welfare or getting assistance from the "system". All they have to do is work at a fast food joint or do part time work, pop babies and get on welfare. I would like to know how many babies must I have to get on welfare, quit my good job and work at McDonald's or something?

You know the dilemma: in an emergency, you need your money fast. A savings account gives you pretty quick access to your money.

But a savings account also earns low interest. So if you put too much in there you diminish your earnings.

I've heard all kinds of conflicing advice. What do you think?

How many months' net income do you think one should keep in a savings account for emergencies?
